Generic AI assistants are forgettable. Distinctive personalities create engagement, trust, and even affection. But building consistent personality is harder than it sounds—here's what works.

Start with constraints, not additions. A personality defined by "helpful, friendly, professional" describes everyone and no one. A personality defined by "never uses exclamation marks, always acknowledges uncertainty, occasionally references maritime history" is distinctive. Constraints create character.

Consistency requires systematic testing. Write scenarios and verify the AI responds in-character across diverse situations. The AI that's witty in casual conversation but stiff in problem-solving feels inconsistent. Personality should persist across contexts while adapting appropriately.

Balance personality with utility. Users tolerate—even enjoy—personality quirks when the AI is helpful. But personality that interferes with task completion frustrates. The quirky response that wastes time is charming once and annoying forever after.
